As Autumn quickly draws to a close, designers all around the world are zealously preparing to unveil their latest collections for Spring/Summer 2012. Not only are these seasons' silhouettes being fanatically deliberated upon as we speak, the more important choice of materials are also painstakingly considered. Entwined in the stitches of a rich textile debate is the use of European linen. As the rise of globalization alarmingly translates into a "race-to-the-bottom" in terms of costs of production, linen, specifically European linen, is being snubbed more and more for an array of alternative, cost-efficient fabrics.
Enter Be Linen (Movie).
Commissioned by the European Linen & Hemp Community, this short documentary unravels the tedious production of European linen from flax to finished product- a complex process involving a number of countries throughout Western Europe. Unbeknownst to many, the majority of European flax is sowed and harvested within a greater area between Caen and Amsterdam, resulting in linen production of the finest quality.
Director Benoit Millot and crew pay a much-deserved tribute to the tireless craftsmanship of the noble men and women of the European Linen Industry, emphasizing their unfaltering commitment to quality and a strict, almost fanatical attention to detail.
Directed by Benoit Millot for the European Linen & Hemp Community.
Ultimately, this film was created in the hopes that more informed decisions shall be made by designers and consumers alike, championing the use of sustainable, versatile, high-quality European Linen.
